Shallow Waters

Shallow Waters

February 25, 2020 by Joe D. Ballard

The apostle Peter had no intention of going into the deep waters with Jesus. For one, he had already been out fishing, and it wasn’t a good day for fishing. And Peter believed in his heart that he knew more about fishing than the son of a carpenter. Peter also didn’t want to look foolish around everyone watching by launching out into the deep. Pushing out a little ways from the land was as far as Peter wanted to go with Jesus. And that’s how most Christians are today as well, content with living life in the shallow waters. When you live out your Christian life in the shallow waters, there’s not much to talk about or to be excited about. When you live your life in the shallow waters, you will always find something to complain about. And when you live life in the shallow waters, you will always be safe among the masses but you will miss the adventure and glory God wants to show you.

Fortunately, Peter’s resistance to the Lord was overcome by one word, “nevertheless.”  “But Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.”  Luke 5:5

How incredible to believe that Peter almost missed seeing the glory of God in the deep. How incredible also to know that if you want to see Gods glory, you will have to go out into the deep also trusting in His direction for your life. Think about it, God delights in revealing His glory, but He lets you decide. What are you going to do? How is God directing you? Isn’t it time to get out of the shallow waters?
